KADUNA — On February 20th, the airwaves across Kaduna city sounded a little different. To commemorate the World Day of Social Justice, our dedicated team and a cohort of passionate volunteers successfully conducted a live "Radio Takeover" at Liberty Radio, turning a standard broadcast into a powerful platform for disability rights and systemic change.
SHIFTING THE NARRATIVES: FROM CHARITY TO CAREER
For too long, the conversation around Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in Nigeria has been framed through the lens of "pity" or "charity." Our mission at Liberty Radio was to dismantle that stereotype. During the intensive live session, our team pivoted the focus to the Employability of Persons with Disabilities, emphasizing that PWDs bring unique skills, resilience, and analytical depth to the Nigerian workforce.
THE LAW IS NOT A SUGGESTION: THE 5% QUOTA
The centerpiece of our broadcast was a deep dive into the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act, 2018. We broke down the 5% Employment Quota, a legal mandate that requires both public and private organizations to ensure that at least 5% of their workforce consists of PWDs.
We made our message clear to every listener and employer tuned in: Inclusion is a fundamental right, not a charitable favor. By refusing to implement the 5% quota, organizations are not just missing out on talent; they are failing to uphold the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
A RESOUNDING SUCCESS
